TFSATax-Free Savings Account
A savings and investing account that helps your money grow without paying tax. After RRSPs, it's the account I work with most often.
Key advantages
- You contribute after-tax money (from your paycheque, for example)
- Growth from interest, dividends and gains is completely tax-free
- Withdrawals are tax-free, any time, for any reason
- Use it for saving or investing
- The government sets a yearly contribution limit
- Withdrawals are added back to your contribution room the next year
RRSPRegistered Retirement Savings Plan
An account designed to help you save for retirement while lowering your taxes today.
Key advantages
- Contributions reduce your taxable income, so you pay less tax now
- Your money grows tax-deferred while it stays in the plan
- You pay tax when you withdraw, usually in retirement
- Best when you expect to be in a lower tax bracket later
FHSAFirst Home Savings Account
A savings account made to help first-time home buyers save for a down payment, combining the best parts of an RRSP and a TFSA.
Key advantages
- Contributions reduce your taxable income, like an RRSP
- Your money grows tax-free, like a TFSA
- Withdrawals for your first home are tax-free
LIRALocked-In Retirement Account
A retirement account that holds pension money you can't freely access yet. It's usually used when you leave a job with a pension, or when you want more control over how that money is invested.
Important to know
- The money stays locked in for retirement
- It grows tax-deferred, just like an RRSP
- You generally can't withdraw early
- It's only for transferred pension funds, not new contributions
- It's eventually converted to a LIF (Life Income Fund) or similar to provide income
RRIFRegistered Retirement Income Fund
What your RRSP becomes when it's time to start paying you an income. The money stays invested and keeps growing tax-deferred.
Important to know
- A minimum amount must be withdrawn every year
- Withdrawals are taxed as income
- Your RRSP must be converted by December 31 of the year you turn 71 (or earlier if you choose)
Non-reg.Non-registered account
A regular account with no special tax shelter. I often open one for clients who have reached their TFSA lifetime maximum ($102,000 as of 2025).
You contribute after-tax money, there are no contribution limits, and you can withdraw at any time.
How growth is taxed (each year)
- Interest: fully taxable
- Dividends: taxable, often at a lower rate if Canadian
- Capital gains: only half of the gain is taxed
